Alexandra Ice Skating Club was formed in 1939,
originally as a division of the Alexandra Winter Sports
Club. For many years, until 1967, skating was on the
natural ice at the Manorburn Dam. We hosted the first
National Championships held in New Zealand in 1939. Then
an outdoor rink was built next to the dam. This was used
by the Club until the new rink was built in the township which opened in 1993. The rink is a 30m x 60m
outdoor rink, the biggest outdoor rink in the southern
hemisphere. We do hope to have it roofed within the next
two years.
The Club was formed to help young figure athletes reach
their full potential. We do this with the assistance of
Professional Figure Skating Coaches, usually from Canada.
At the moment we have the shortest season of any of the
Clubs in New Zealand but this will change when we have a
roof fitted.
Despite this we have been very successful in local,
provincial and national competitions. We have past &
present champions in these competitions. The club also
have two Synchronized Skating Teams. The Junior Team has
competed successfully over a number of years. Hopefully
the Beginner Team will start competing next season.
We have Club Championships in June and every second year
we host either the Otago/Southland Championship or the
South Island Championship.
Our Club runs a Kiwiskate Programme for Tiny Tots through
to Adults. To help foster skating the Club has skates for
younger members to hire for the season.
Our active and busy committee welcomes anyone who wishes
to learn to skate and promote skating.
